Gum reshaping isn't something that many people have heard about. It's a type of cosmetic dentistry that helps even out the gums. Some people's gums are either too low or too high on their teeth, while others may have a gum line that is uneven.
Generally, these conditions aren't cause of any oral health concern, but they can cause embarrassment. Some people are afraid to smile because they hate how their gums look. That's where gum reshaping comes in. After the procedure, your gums will look perfect.
How Is it Done? When you come in for gum reshaping, we will give you a local anesthetic first so you aren't in any pain. Then, we will actually use a scalpel or laser to reshape the gum line. That may sound horrible, but it's actually a fairly minor procedure. After the reshaping is done, you may feel some pain for a short period of time. However, this pain is usually pretty mild, and you can control it with over-the-counter pain medication.
After the Procedure
After you've had your gums reshaped, you will need to watch what you eat for a week or so until your gums have fully healed. Basically, avoid anything that might cut your gums. This includes any food that's crunchy or that's hard. Try to eat softer foods for a few days so your gums can heal.
You should also make sure you have time to rest after the procedure. You should at least take the next day off from work and spend it resting. Limit physical activity for several days after the procedure. Remember, it can take a few weeks for your gums to fully heal. If your gums don't seem to be healing correctly or if the pain gets worse, you'll want to call us as soon as possible because something may be wrong.
