Prophylaxis (Teeth Cleaning)
An important aspect of periodontics is caring for and improving the health of gum tissue. This is done through prophylaxis, which is a preventive treatment taken as an active action against the development of gum disease. In more simple terms, we can perform a dental cleaning, including a deep cleaning below the gumline, to help you achieve and maintain oral health. Our staff at Edward I. Jutkowitz, D.M.D., P.C. - Periodontics and Implantology is specifically trained to examine and assist our patients in obtaining healthier teeth and gums.
What is Gum Disease?
There are so many terms used when discussing gum disease that sometimes our patients feel confused about what is occurring. Periodontitis is an infection of the gums, sometimes we use the phrase gum disease to encompass all phases of this disease but there are varying degrees and how we approach it. These degrees can include:
What can be done?
As with any disease, catching it early is best. We hope that through regularly scheduled appointments, we can keep an eye on the level of progression and help stave off the disease. Something that patients seldom understand is that their oral health plays a role in their overall health. If your body is fighting infection in one area, it has less resources to fight off infection in another area. If your bone health suffers, there is a cascade of effects that can cause much larger issues. We hope to help our patients with the education and tools to help.
Dental examinations, along with gum disease checks, oral cancer screenings, and examining the level of decay are important preventive steps that we take very seriously. For more information, contact our office at: (516) 740-1848
