Could Your Prostate Problems Be Caused by Untreated Gum Disease?

Untreated gum disease is associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer development. There are sufficient research and considerable evidence that prove the connection between gum disease and prostate cancer. Therefore, if you are experiencing constant prostate problems, untreated gum disease could be playing a role.

Gum Disease and Prostate Cancer

Several studies and a growing number of reports have shown that there is a significant connection between gum disease and the increased risk of prostate cancer. A more recent study found that people with untreated gum disease have a 13% higher risk of getting prostate cancer. Furthermore, another report indicated that when gum disease is treated, it improves prostate cancer’s general symptoms. It also lowers the PSA levels in patients suffering from both prostatitis and periodontitis.

Gum disease increases prostate cancer risk when periodontal pathogens and microbes harboring the LPS endotoxins induce immune pathways. When these pathways are activated, they cause downstream synthesis and the release of pro-inflammatory mediators such as metalloproteinases. These mediators might enter the systemic circulation, leading to increased systemic inflammatory markers. The presence of these elements in the systemic circulation is associated with the risk of prostate cancer.

How to Prevent Prostate Cancer Through Proper Gum Care

When men are encouraged to prevent prostate cancer, the primary focus is always on fitness and a good diet. However, most people do not know that there is a connection between prostate cancer and gum disease. So, gum care will also play an essential role in preventing prostate cancer. Some of the common gum care guidelines include daily flossing and avoiding or quitting smoking. You should also come in for regular dental cleanings. This will help keep prostate cancer at bay. Visit our offices for more information on how gum disease increases the risk of prostate cancer.
