Gum Disease Can Contribute to Poor Lung Health

Gum Disease Can Contribute to Poor Lung HealthWe all know that there is a significant number of bacteria in our mouth. However, pathogens are bad news for our oral cavity. While it was initially believed that the bacteria in our mouth affected our teeth and gums alone, new studies reveal that they could spread to other parts of our bodies.

Long-term exposure to the bacteria and the resultant inflammation will often create a problem for our gums. It is this problem which allows the bacteria to travel beyond our mouth, thereby resulting in the inflammation in different parts of our bodies.

Gum Diseases and Lung Health

Bacteria which causes respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and bronchitis might come from oral cavity and any existing periodontal disorder. Nonetheless, poor oral hygiene will allow an increase and build-up of this bacteria before spreading beyond the mouth. In simple terms, the better we care for our mouths, the healthier our lungs will be. These types of bacteria can also build-up around various dental appliances such as bridges, dentures and partials. Thus, just like our teeth, these appliances should also be cleaned on a regular basis.

Prevention Measures

Preventing these types of conditions is pretty straightforward. All you have to do is to ensure that you stay fully committed to great oral hygiene. You should also ensure that all dental appliances are pathogenic free at all times. On top of that, you should also schedule professional cleanings.

While the number of annual cleaning sessions will vary from one person to another, we will evaluate your current oral condition and then create a customized plan based on your dental condition. If we suspect that you are already experiencing any respiratory condition, then we will advise you to visit a health practitioner, while we discuss a coordinating care routine.
