Learn How Gum Disease and Breast Cancer Are Connected
Posted on 10/19/2020 by Edward I Jutkowitz, DMD, PC
Learn How Gum Disease and Breast Cancer Are ConnectedBreast cancer has been quite a challenge for many women in the world. Some have even lost their lives because of this deadly disease. Research has shown that it is caused by many factors, including the consumption of processed foods, smoking, florescent bulbs, and many more discovered every day. Among these recent discoveries is gum disease, which has been found to be a silent cause of breast cancer in women.

Poor Oral Hygiene Has Been Linked to Breast Cancer in Women

The Journal for Breast Cancer Research and Treatment did research and found that women were highly likely to have breast cancer from poor oral health practices. This is because the gum is sensitive, thus prone to bacterial infections like periodontal disease. This disease may cause the gum to weaken, leading to the loss of teeth. Periodontal disease may lead to other infections such as the Epstein-Barr virus (Mono) and cytomegalovirus. These viruses are dangerous and can cause some functions in the immune system to shut down.

Though this is not proven yet, research done has also revealed some oral microorganisms in breast cancer tumors. This shows that bacteria from the mouth can invade the bloodstream and affect breast tissues. For this reason, people with periodontal disease can easily develop breast cancer since the harmful bacteria can go to the breast tissues through the bloodstream. It is, therefore, important to practice high oral health to avoid contracting these harmful bacterial infections.
