When Is the Right Time to Seek Help for Gum Issues? If you notice a bit of blood in your sink after brushing your teeth, it could be a sign of gum disease. Bleeding is one of the early signs of gum disease. The mild stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. At this stage, only your gums will be affected. However, if you don't treat this condition, the infection spreads below the gum line and to the bone. At this point, it develops into a more serious condition called periodontitis. This is why it is important to come to our offices immediately if you notice the first symptom. Detecting gum disease in its early stages will help prevent its development. To be more careful, it will help to know some of the signs you should watch out for.

Bleeding, Sore, or Swollen Gums

If you have aching or bleeding gums, you could be suffering from gum disease. When your gums are healthy, they won't bleed when you floss and brush. If you fail to brush and floss regularly, the plaque created from bacteria will build up steadily and start irritating the gums. This will make them sensitive, swollen, red, and susceptible to bleeding. Furthermore, the plaque or bacteria film attacks the healthy tissue surrounding the teeth. This will eventually lead to the destruction of the gum tissue.

Gum Recession

Another sign you should watch out for is gum recession. When gum disease advances, the teeth appear to be longer. This is because the gums surrounding them are slowly receding away. Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue in areas around the tooth, exposing the tooth root. This condition will not only cause damage to the gums but could also lead to tooth sensitivity. Therefore, it is very important to visit our offices for treatment immediately after you notice the first sign of gum disease.
