Alcohol Can Ruin Good Gum Health

Do you only have a drink of alcohol now and again? If so, then your gums are likely not at much of a risk of alcohol-related problems. However, if you drink more often than that, you need to make sure you are taking good care of your teeth and gums.

Those with alcohol addictions or who simply drink to excess regularly, often have issues with the health of their gums. This is because of how much alcohol can dry out those sensitive tissues. If you want to keep your gums healthy, as we all do, you need to make sure to keep a close eye on the health of your gums.

What Alcohol Can Do to The Gums

Alcohol can do a lot of harm to your gums. One of the first things that alcohol does when it comes in contact with any tissue is it burns. This is because the alcohol is instantly trying to dry out that tissue. If you have dry gums, you are more likely to have gum-related problems. Dry mouth can lead to you having a much higher chance of developing cavities and gum disease. If you drink regularly, you may develop chronic dry mouth, which means that you get this feeling even when you are not drinking.

The best thing to do is make sure all of your dental professionals, including those here in our office, are aware that you drink alcohol at least sometimes. That way, we know to keep a little closer eye on how your gums look. This is especially true if you are going through gum disease treatment. The more alcohol goes into your mouth, the drier and more sensitive your gums will be, and the harder it is going to be to treat gum disease. Reach out to us today to find out more.
