Important Recovery Notes Following Implant Placement Surgery
Dental implants are one of the best ways to restore your smile and your oral health. Once you’re home from your outpatient procedure, the healing can begin. Here are some important things you need to know while you recover after your implant placement surgery.
Home Care
After you’re out of surgery, we will instruct you to bite down gently, but firmly on the gauze rolls that were placed over the surgical sites. Do not remove them for at least the first hour unless the bleeding becomes uncontrollable. The pressure from your bite should cause the site to begin the healing process and keep it from bleeding.
For the first day: Do not rinse your mouth vigorously or attempt to brush your teeth aggressively. Do not touch, prod or disturb the surgical area. Avoid drinking from a straw or smoking as this can result in an increased chance of dry sockets.
It’s important that you keep your mouth clean during the healing process to avoid infection. Gentle tooth brushing is allowed and encouraged. Once your bleeding is minimal (after 24 hours) you may use a saltwater rinse. Be cautious to rinse gently and allow the water to simply fall from our mouth into the sink, do not spit. These rinses can be done after you eat.
Soft foods are recommended until you’re healed completely. Avoid overly hot or cold foods as your mouth will likely be sensitive for a few days.
Swelling is normal after implant placement surgery, and it can be minimized by using an ice pack applied to the outside of your cheek. Follow our 20/20 rule with cold packs, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Medication may also be prescribed to you to help you manage your pain.
