Reasons to Visit Your Periodontist
Brushing and flossing those pearly whites will make sure they’re in the best shape. But, turns out, doing these two things religiously every day can also help you prevent serious medical conditions, such as arthritis, Alzheimer’s Disease, and cardiovascular disease as well. But these aren’t the only reasons for you to visit a periodontist. Let’s find out what they are.
Periodontal Disease
One of the main reasons to pay a visit to the periodontist is if you have periodontal disease or gum disease. This is a bacterial infection that is triggered by dental plaque that results from poor oral hygiene. While gum disease during its early stages is easy to treat, severe periodontal disease could require expert advice, especially if the periodontal disease has spread further and is affecting the bone.
When You’re Referred by a Dentist
Another reason to visit a periodontist is if your dentist refers you to one. This is mostly the case when the periodontal disease has grown severe and is affecting the bone and other soft tissue surrounding the teeth. This is caused by the buildup of dental plaque, which can loosen the gums surrounding the teeth and can also result in losing your teeth.
Dental Surgery
At the latter stages of periodontal disease, simply brushing your teeth and flossing daily isn’t going to cut it. Although that does help, the time for something as easy as brushing your teeth and following a healthy diet has passed. Now, you need the expertise of a periodontist. These are dentists who specialize in periodontic disease along with advanced surgical procedures.
