Risks of Gum Disease Rise in Areas Without Fluoridated Water
Fluoride is a mineral that’s naturally found in water, air, food, and plants. It has the ability to strengthen our teeth against plaque attacks that are created after drinking or eating anything containing sugar.
Consumption of fluoridated water and also regular brushing of our teeth with fluoride toothpaste will prevent the development of dental health problems. Fluoride also has the ability to reverse the effects of tooth decay during the early stages.
Fluoride in Water
Water fluoridation refers to the process of adding fluoride to water, which have low fluoride content. Back in time, people who resided in regions that lacked fluoridated water or people who relied on tacked water were advised to consume fluoride supplements. Nonetheless, the use of fluoride in children under the age of 6 years is associated with dental fluorosis.
If your water supply is not fluoridated or you rely on tanked water, then you should schedule an appointment with us so that we can advise you on other options for gaining the benefits of fluoride.
Overexposure to Fluoride
Just as it is the case with many medications, including mineral supplements and vitamins, too much fluoride in water can be quite harmful. Many children get the recommended amount of fluoride through fluoridated supplements or water and fluoridated toothpaste. Too much fluoride, especially when the teeth are developing, can lead to enamel fluorosis, a molting, or permanent discoloration of the teeth. Symptoms of fluoride poisoning include diarrhea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, increased thirst, and increased salivation.
