What Are Gum Pockets and How Do They Develop?

The American Academy of Periodontology defines gum pockets as voids between the gum and teeth that form as the result of the destruction of tissue and bone. The bacteria in the mouth that leads to periodontal disease can settle in these pockets and cause them to deepen. When this happens, we need to perform periodontal surgery to keep the bacteria from attacking the bone and tissue, which leads to both bone and tissue loss. If too much bone is lost, the teeth are normally removed.

How Gum Pocket Surgery Helps

We can reduce gum pockets with a procedure known as pocket reduction surgery. We need to perform this procedure when the pockets become too deep to adequately clean using at-home oral hygiene and a routine of professional dental care. During the surgery, we fold back the gum tissue so we can remove the bacteria that is causing the infection. We then secure the tissue into place. In some cases, we may smooth irregular surfaces of the underlying bone so bacteria cannot settle in those areas. After the surgery, the gum tissue can attach itself to the bone once again. Reducing the pocket depth size is crucial in preventing the continued progression of periodontal disease.
