When Is a Gum Graft Necessary?

Treating Gum Recession with Gingival Graft

When Is a Gum Graft Necessary?

A gum graft is a procedure that helps fix the effects of gum disease. When gum disease advances, it causes damage to the connective tissue and other underlying tissues. This leads to symptoms like gum recession. When this happens, gum grafting can help fix it. Gum disease can be treated, especially when the condition is diagnosed early. There are several options to treat it, and gum graft surgery is one way we can do so.

Gum Graft for Gum Disease

Gum disease is a common condition that can cause adverse effects when left untreated. It is important that you get treated as soon as possible when the disease hasn’t advanced to severe stages. This will help prevent the worst outcome, like tooth loss and permanent damage.

When gum disease has caused your gums to recede and expose the roots of your teeth, a gum graft surgery is necessary. After your gums have receded, they form pockets between your tooth and your gums; this can become a breeding ground for bacteria. With time, the bacteria will harden to form tartar and plaque, this puts you at risk of tooth decay and more advanced gum disease. This is why it is important to undergo a gum graft surgery before things get out of hand.

Luckily, we have a team of experts that can successfully perform gum graft surgery. During the procedure, our professionals will attach tissue over the tooth to cover the exposed roots. This helps with the restoration of your natural gum line. Keep in mind that the tissue for the gum graft can be taken from soft tissue in your mouth or donated from a tissue bank. This procedure is quite impactful and will go a long way in treating gum disease. Furthermore, it eliminates the pockets in your gums that bacteria tend to breed. Visit our offices for more information on gum graft surgery and its importance.
