Your Quality of Life Can Be Changed if You Have Gum Disease

What is the Main Cause of periodontal Disease?

Your Quality of Life Can Be Changed if You Have Gum Disease

If you have gum disease, you may not realize just how serious it is. It only affects your gums, you might think, so how could it seriously change your quality of life? Unfortunately, gum disease can greatly impact many areas of your life and your body. Here are just a few different things it can do to change how you live.

Early Gum Disease May Seem Harmless

When you’re dealing with the early stage of gum disease, gingivitis, it may seem harmless. Your gums bleed a little, but that doesn’t really change how you live, right? Unfortunately, because there’s no pain and little impact on life, many people don’t treat gingivitis. It then progresses into more serious stages of gum disease, and those are very impactful.

Periodontitis Changes Your Life

When gingivitis progresses into periodontitis, it can have a much bigger impact on things. You may still not feel much pain, but because your gums are infected and you’re losing bone in your jaw, you may find that your teeth become loose and start to fall out. That can make eating certain foods difficult and painful, especially if your teeth break off or if the nerve is exposed. You may also be embarrassed because you’ve lost some teeth, and that will have a major impact on your social life.

Losing teeth and jaw bone density can impact your speech, too. You may find that you don’t say certain words in the same way or even have difficulty pronouncing some words. Your taste buds can also be affected—you may not be able to taste certain flavors. Don’t let gum disease reach the point that it impacts your overall quality of life.
